About Alex

Alex was born in Sturno, Italy and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1961. He resided in New York until moving to California in 1983 and remains fluent in Italian. Alex is married to fellow New Yorker Barbara, and they are the parents of one boy and two girls. The Giovanniello’s reside in Diamond Bar, California.

 

Alex’s practice includes the defense of cases involving all aspects and areas of healthcare liability including Skilled Nursing Facilities, Hospitals, Dental, Psychotherapy, Clinics and the defense of Doctors. His practice includes Elder/Dependent Adult Abuse, Medical Malpractice, Administrative Actions, Medical and other Products Liability, Title 17 & 22, Assisted Living Facilities, Residential Facilities, Community Care Facilities, Crises Management, Collections, Injunctive Relief, Foster Care and Foster Family Agencies, Charitable Institutions, Department of Public Health (“DPH”) Administrative Actions, Legal Malpractice, Agents and Brokers, Premises Liability, Catastrophic Personal Injury, Construction Defect, Commercial Litigation, Collections and Employment Practices Liability.

Academic Background

Alex received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the State University of New York at Brockport, graduating Cum Laude in 1982. Alex was the recipient of Dean’s Honors and a participant in the Washington, D.C. Internship Program for academic achievement. He received his Juris Doctor degree in 1986 from the University of San Diego School of Law. He was admitted to practice in California in 1986, New York in 1988, Nevada in 2009, Arizona in 2009 and Washington in 2010. Alex is admitted to practice in all the California Federal District Courts and the Southern District Court of New York.

Publications

Alex has authored several publications including a California handbook on Healthcare Liability and the Federal/California handbook on Employment Practice Liability. He has also authored handbook materials for seminars presented in Elder/Dependent Adult Abuse. This includes Pre-trial issues, Mealey’s Nursing Home Litigation, January 2002; Elder Abuse and Tort Claims In California (Co-author), National Business Institute, 2002; Deposition and Trial Testimony – Nursing Home and RCFE Liability, Lorman Education Services, May 2001; Nursing Home Malpractice In California – Successful Case Management From Investigation To Trial (Co-author) National Business Institute, 2000; and, Elder Abuse Tort Claims In California (Co-author) National Business Institute, 1999. Alex has a published opinion with the California Supreme Court and Second Apellate District Court.

Speaking

Alex has lectured nationally for corporations, insurance companies and educational institutions. Alex also has presented seminars to healthcare professionals, attorneys, hospitals and skilled nursing facilities on elder abuse, nursing home malpractice, enforcing ADR agreements, defensive charting, practical patient care, liability issues, pre-trial procedures, uses of medical records in litigation, ethics, trial, removal to federal court and deposition testimony. Alex has presented workshops on the California State Insurance Regulations as well as Federal and California Employment Practices Liability. Alex also presents MCLE training seminars on defending skilled nursing facilities, elder abuse, civil procedure, law and motion, settlement, negotiations, soft tissue injuries, medical evidence, employment liability and law firm management.

Trial/Arbitration

Alex has participated in over twenty-four jury and court trials, hundreds of judicial and commercial arbitrations, administrative hearings and binding mediations.

 

Civic Activities

Alex is a member on the Advisory Committee to the Los Angeles County Elder Abuse Forensic Center. Alex is a participant in the USC School of Geriatrics’ annual Mock Trial and also serves as a settlement officer for the Los Angeles Superior Court Crash Settlement Conference Program.
